Boro young guns blown away

30th October 2004

Malborough & Hope Cove FC 2-5 Paignton Utd Reserves FC

With key players missing Malborough & Hope Cove fielded their youngest side in their history with seven teenagers starting the match.

A Wayne Kovacic goal after ten minutes gave them the perfect start and when the keeper had to make decent saves from Harry Dawson, James Whitley and Kovacic once more it looked like Boro were in for an enjoyable afternoon. But the game was turned on its head when Paignton scored two superb goals from distance within minutes of each other. Malborough & Hope Cove faded badly after going behind and conceded a sloppy third goal just before half-time.

The second-half started with Boro on top, but a dreadful penalty decision at the other end, which was duly converted all but sealed the fate of the Boro youngsters. Joby Barraclough came on as substitute to make a welcome return and was involved in the build-up that earned Boro a penalty which Whitley tucked away, but the home side never really looked like reducing the deficit further and finally conceded a fifth to end a disappointing afternoon which started so well.

Malborough & Hope Cove will be looking to bounce back next Saturday (6 November) when they entertain Riviera Spurs Reserves, 2.30 K.O.
