Woman rescued after 40ft down cliff

27th April 2005

Coastguards, paramedics and a rescue helicopter were scrambled to the scene following the fall just after midday on Tuesday (26 April).

The woman's husband raised the alarm by mobile phone, telling the coastguard that his wife was in a poor way and he could not reach her.

When the Hope Cove team arrived, they found her still on the cliff face and in a very precarious position. As well as a suspected broken arm, she had other injuries.

Despite their efforts, they could not get her onto a stretcher without the risk of her slipping further down the cliff so a winchman from the helicopter crew was lowered to the cliff base to help.

She was eventually brought to the top of the cliff where she was stabilised by paramedics and then flown to Plymouth's Derriford Hospital for treatment.

Stuart Elliman, Brixham Coastguard watch manager said: "We would of course emphasise to any cliff walker to take extreme caution in wet and blustery weather as cliff edges can become extremely unstable and slippery. We are still uncertain how this particular incident occurred but of course we wish her a speedy recovery."
